What is a Dental Bridge?

Dental bridges, also known as fixed partial dentures, are dental restorations that are used to replace one or more missing teeth in the same area, by joining permanently to adjacent teeth or dental implants. By using adjacent teeth to anchor the bridge to, a dental bridge works to fill in or “bridge” the gap that is left behind from a missing tooth by placing a false tooth in the area that the gap is. Bridges are shaped and coloured to match your existing natural teeth, so they seamlessly blend in with the rest of your teeth for a very natural looking appearance. There are many different types of dental bridges available, depending on how they are fabricated and the way in which they anchor to the adjacent teeth.

How are Dental Bridges Fabricated?

Dental bridges are most commonly made using the indirect method by which the bridge is fabricated outside of the mouth and cemented in afterwards. A dental bridge is fabricated by reducing the teeth on either side of the missing tooth or teeth by a preparation pattern determined by the location of the teeth and by the material used to fabricate the bridge. In other words, the abutment teeth are reduced in size to accommodate the material to be used to restore the size and shape of the original teeth in a correct alignment and contact with the opposing teeth. Once the teeth are prepared, an impression is taken and sent off to a lab for processing. The new bridge is usually sent back to the office within 1-2 weeks. To ensure protection and aesthetics while waiting for the permanent bridge to be completed, a temporary bridge is made in-office while the final bridge is being processed. Once returned, the temporary bridge is removed and the final bridge is permanently cemented.

About Dental Bridges

Not only does a bridge restore function and aesthetics, it also prevents the surrounding teeth from drifting out of position and fills in spaces that would otherwise leave surrounding teeth susceptible to tooth decay. A dental bridge is an excellent treatment option for one or more missing teeth.

The best candidate for a dental bridge is someone with one or more missing teeth and good dental hygiene. Special attention to hygiene at home will be necessary, especially flossing under the bridge. Furthermore, dental visits, including professional cleanings, should be completed every six months.
