Your Chestermere Choice for Teeth Cleanings, Hygiene and Preventative Care!

Chestermere Dental believes that healthy teeth and gums are the cornerstone of a healthy mouth and gorgeous smile! That is why we are pleased to offer teeth cleanings and hygiene/preventive care appointments to help you achieve optimal oral health. Although regular home maintenance is very important, it focuses only on areas of the teeth that are above the gumline (called scaling). A professional dental cleaning is able to reach not only areas of the teeth above the gum line, but also below the gum line (called root planing) that home care simply cannot. It is only through regular scaling and root planing procedures to remove plaque, tartar and bacterial toxins from hard to reach areas below the gum line that we are able to keep your gums and teeth healthy from top to bottom!

Regular Teeth Cleanings and Good Hygiene Help Maintain Optimal Oral Health!

One of Chestermere Dental’s primary services is hygiene and preventative care. Whether you have healthy gums or are in a state of active periodontal disease, we are here to offer teeth cleaning and preventive care check-up appointments. With a qualified preventative care team in place, we provide our clients with fast and efficient hygiene services. Our dental hygienists take many advanced training courses on hygiene treatment, and are always gentle when dealing with both adults and children who are experiencing periodontal disease.

What Happens at a Professional Hygiene and Teeth Cleaning Appointment?

Depending on your preventative treatment schedule, your professional hygiene and teeth cleaning appointment may include:

  • A complete periodontal assessment
  • A thorough check of your gum tissue, including checking for any gum recession, the presence of gingivitis and possible gum disease
  • An intra-oral exam to check gum tissue, tongue, and lips for confirmation of health. This would also include checking for loose teeth or bleeding gums.
  • Digital x-rays when required, to check bone levels, check for cavities in between teeth, and detect other possible problems with the oral cavity.
  • Checking the depth of periodontal pockets
  • Removing plaque, tartar and bacteria from above and below the gum line so that gums and bone that make up the foundation of your teeth remain healthy and disease free.
  • An oral cancer screening and checking the tissues of the head and neck for confirmation of health
  • Reviewing your home care techniques and their effectiveness.

About Teeth Cleaning and Teeth Scaling

At Chestermere Dental, we use an ultrasonic scaler to perform our professional cleanings. The ultrasonic scaler consists of a wand with a small scaling tip that produces soft ultrasonic vibrations and a gentle flow of water. As the tip moves along the tooth surface, it creates small pulses that break up plaque, tartar and other debris. Ultrasonic scaling has proven to be very effective at removing large debris below the gumline in a very quick and efficient manner. Because of this, appointment times are shortened and patient comfort is improved. To ensure complete care, hand scaling, which offers a greater tactile sense for hygienists, is still always completed following ultrasonic scaling.

How often should you visit Us for a Dental Hygiene Visit?

Removal of tartar and bacteria are crucial to treating gingivitis, controlling periodontal disease and preventing tooth decay. Regular professional periodontal and preventative maintenance visits help break the stronghold of bacteria in your gums and slows or eliminates their destructive effects. Chestermere Dental understands that each patient will require a different cleaning and hygiene schedule that is based on their unique needs. Most people visit us for a dental hygiene appointment every 6 months, although some people may benefit from coming in every 3-4 months, while others may be able to visit us every 9-12 months. Grinding habits, level of home care, genetics and teeth positioning are all important factors in determining the best oral hygiene and cleaning schedule for each individual patient. For patients who are experiencing heavy staining, gum disease, heavy calculus buildup or loose teeth, a higher frequency of cleaning visits will help to keep teeth healthier. The Chestermere Dental team will discuss with you how often you should visit us for a hygiene and check-up based on your individual and specific needs.
