Although adult teeth are meant to last a lifetime, there are some situations where their removal is the best course of treatment. If you are experiencing any pain or other issues with your wisdom teeth, Chestermere Dental is pleased to offer safe and effective wisdom teeth extraction.
Located in the very back of the mouth, wisdom teeth are the last and final set of molars to emerge, usually between the ages of 14-30. Some people never get their wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth can be a valuable asset if they grow in vertically and are aligned properly. For many people, they do come in properly and cause no issues. For some people however, wisdom teeth grow diagonally and horizontally, causing problems and requiring intervention. The uneven growth can cause a myriad of problems including crowding, damage to adjacent molars and may even impact the jawbone itself. If left untreated, problematic wisdom teeth can lead to gum disease, pain, tooth decay and occlusion problems. Additionally, wisdom teeth sometimes do not fully erupt because there is not enough room, and they get stuck in the gums. When this occurs, it is termed ‘impacted’ wisdom teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth can provide a fertile ground for bacteria to form at the opening of the mouth, which can lead to infection in the gums causing a great deal of pain and discomfort, swelling and illness.
A tooth is said to be impacted when there is not enough space in the dental arch for the tooth to emerge, and its growth is affected by gum, bone or another tooth. There are different types of impaction. ‘Mesioangular impaction’ occurs when the tooth grows forward towards the front of the mouth. ‘Vertical impaction’ occurs when the formed wisdom tooth does not fully erupt through the gum. ‘Horizontal impaction,’ which is far less common than the other two forms of impaction, occurs when the tooth is angled sideways, growing into the roots of the second molar.
Impacted wisdom teeth are usually removed because of problems they are causing in the mouth, or because of future problems that may arise if they remain in the mouth. In many cases, damage caused by wisdom teeth is not visible on the surface. Your Chestermere Dental dentist will usually take full x-rays of the mouth to see what is going on underneath the gums. This will help them determine what type of extraction may be required. Your dentist can often foresee future issues, so may recommend the removal of your wisdom teeth before any problems arise, thus helping you avoid expensive surgical procedures in the future.
